Newsletter January - Febuary 2018
Welcome to the first newsletter of 2018. Some catching up to do, as we missed a newsletter, apologies for that, whilst we finalised details for some forthcoming events.
Our Annual General Meeting was held on 8th December when the Committee presented its annual report before standing down. All mem
bers of the committee were subsequently re-elected for 2018. Once again, Wendy and her team of helpers provided a magnificent Buffet and the Christmas Raffle, which raised a splendid £1066, was drawn.
January - Once again, our January meeting featured that popular pair of auctioneers, Ray and Andrew, as we held the traditional ‘Christmas Auction’. A great time was had by everyone and we raised a record amount for this event of £342.50.
February - A thought provoking and entertaining presentation from Ropa on ‘Coping with Disability’. Ropa, who has severely impaired vision, travels into London every day on public transport assisted by her guide dog, Ernie. Her talk certainly brought home how we can all help others with, sometimes not obvious, disabilities by following simple rules and being aware of others.
FORTHCOMING MEETINGS and EVENTS FOR 2018
March - Our next meeting on 19th March will feature an update on the TAVI procedure, presented by Dr Aggrawal and Sister Sheila Smith.
April - On April 16th Andrew Babicz returns by popular demand to talk on a gardening topic.
Quiz Night - Friday 25th May. Tickets will be on sale shortly and will be £5 per head with a maximum of 14 tables of 8 per table. Tickets will be on sale from the next meeting. This event is always a sell out so please purchase your tickets as soon as you can to avoid missing out. The theme of the quiz will reflect the 10 year celebrations and will include some favourite sections from previous quizzes as well as some new sections.
Gala Dinner to Mark Our 10th Anniversary
This year is the tenth anniversary of the foundation of our group. To mark the occasion, a Gala Dinner is to be held at the Holiday Inn, Basildon, on Friday 21st September. There will be a three course meal, live entertainment with “Elvis”, a raffle, an auction and a cash bar. Tickets, priced at £30 per head will be on sale from the March meeting. This is expected to be a popular event, with numbers limited to 200, so be sure to book early. Tickets on sale from March 19th Contact Ray Simpson on 07989 964630.
New General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
As discussed at the February meeting, new regulations in connection with Data Protection due to come into force in May. Previously there were exemptions for small groups such as ours, provided that we sought members’ consent to hold their details. No such exemptions will exist from May this year. In order to comply with the new regulations, we will have to document what personal data we hold and with whom it is shared. We will also need to state how we process the information and how we obtain consent for holding the data.
The approach that has been agreed by your committee is to state that:-
1. The data held will be the names, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers of those people who wish to belong to the Basildon and District Heart Support Group.
2. The data described above will only be used for the purposes of:-
Distribution of newsletters, reminders and other information pertaining to the meetings and business of the Basildon and District Heart Support Group.
The sale of the Basildon and District Heart Support Group Christmas Raffle Tickets.
The sale of tickets to events organised by the Basildon and District Heart Support Group.
3. We will never pass any details of, or pertaining to, members to any individual or organisation.
4. We will take regular, positive steps to ensure members wish to remain on the mailing list.
5. We will store the data in a secure manner and take all reasonable steps to ensure that security.
Future distribution of this newsletter.
As previously stated, our newsletter will now only be available via e-mail. Most folk now have access to email, however, we can provide a printed copy in exceptional circumstances following a written request.
