A Happy New Year to you all and welcome to the first newsletter of 2019.
We have had several meetings since the last newsletter. In October, Dr Jason Dungu, a cardiologist, gave an excellent talk on some of the imaging techniques used when investigating and treating cardio vascular issues. It is amazing to see how quickly technology is improving the way in which a diagnosis can be made and the subsequent procedure undertaken.
In November we had our ever popular table based discussions. This is always a good opportunity to share information with others who have experienced similar issues. As always, these discussions were supported by staff from the Rehab Unit in CTC.
At the November meeting, we said farewell to Janet Burgess from the Rehab Unit. Janet has helped many of us through rehab and has always given unstintingly of her own time in supporting Hearts & Minds. We wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement.
In December we held our Annual General Meeting. This is the only formal meeting that we hold, and the accounts for the year ended 31st October were circulated and agreed. The existing committee stepped down. With the exception of Ray Simpson, members of committee, together with two new volunteers, stood for election and were duly elected. Our thanks to Ray for all the work he has put into the running of Hearts & Minds over the last ten years. Thanks also to Wendy, Donald and their helpers for the excellent buffet at the AGM.
Proceeds from Christmas Draw
The Christmas draw also took place at the December meeting. This year, you raised an impressive £1,135. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets.
It is worth just repeating here, that over the last ten years you have raised over £70,000.00 which has all been spent on equipment etc. for the CTC and the wards to enable them to give heart patients a greater chance of recovery from heart related problems.
FORTHCOMING MEETINGS and EVENTS FOR 2019

Also for your diaries, the quiz night will be held on Friday 17th May and the Bingo Night on Friday 16th August.
Opening of facility on Roding ward
You may remember that in 2017 we funded the provision of a patient/ visitor facility on Chelmer Ward. In 2018 we funded similar facilities on Roding Ward. These facilities were opened in December and are a great help to patients and their visitors alike. They provide a quiet, comfortable place to sit and talk, often about difficult things, away from the bustle and clinical environment of the ward.
Jim Roberts from Hearts & Minds together with Danny McCormick from CTC, cut the ribbon to open the new facility on Roding ward. Also Present are Liz Shaughnessy, Matron Cardiology, Lorna Coyle, Ward Manager and the staff of Roding Ward.
MONTHLY MEETINGS held on the 3rd Monday of the month at Laindon Community Centre, High Road, Laindon. Doors open at 7pm and the meetings start at 7.30pm.
