Newsletter May - June 2019
Hearts & Minds
Basildon & District Heart Support Group
A self-help group that helps patients & carers face the future
Welcome to the May/June edition of our newsletter.
In this months news are a roundup of recent events; a look forward to forthcoming events, including the dinner and news on donations as well as information on World Heart Day.
Weve had two group meetings since the last newsletter. In April, Andrew Babicz returned to talk about the things we should be doing in the garden now that spring has (nearly) arrived. In May, Ray Simpson provided his usual entertaining refresher demonstration on CPR and why we all should know how to carry out this lifesaving technique. Also at the May meeting Sophie Tibbetts, from the British Heart Foundation, gave us an update on the latest BHF funded research.
We held an enjoyable and successful Quiz Night in May, which raised an amazing £529. Thanks to all concerned, particularly our Quiz Master, Ian.
Appointment of Trustee
As you will know, Heart & Minds is a registered charity. Following Andrew Catleys resignation as a trustee and the nominated contact, the committee appointed Jim Roberts as his replacement. Wendy Wright, Donald Lowe, Donna Jessop remain as trustees.
We recently received a very generous donation of £958 from Nick Garden. Nick raised money running a benefit concert in memory of local musician and DJ, Mick Lightfoot. Mick sadly died following a heart attack.
David March recently helped his local bowls club with a computer problem and they kindly donated £40 for our funds.
World Heart Day
World Heart Day is on Sunday 29th September. To mark this event, we will be joining up with the British Heart Foundation and plan to run a couple of tables selling all sorts of useful heart related merchandise. Details are yet to be finalised, but the event will be held on Tuesday 1st October and we will probably have tables in the CTC reception area and the main hospital reception. We will definitely require volunteers to run the tables. More details as soon as we have finalised our plans.
The ever-popular bingo night will be held on Friday 16th August. The ticket price will include a Fish & Chip (low fat of course!) supper. Bingo cards available to purchase on the night. Tickets now on sale, contact Steve or Wendy
The dinner this year will be held at the Gun pub in Pitsea. Tickets are £35 and this includes a 3 course dinner and entertainment. For tickets please contact Wendy. This is a popular venue and places are limited to 60. Book early to avoid disappointment!
Raising money for the British Heart Foundation by recycling printer cartridges.
No apologies for mentioning this yet again. The Recycling Factory will make a donation of up to £2 for every inkjet cartridge they can successfully recycle. They can normally recycle original inkjet cartridges for HP, Canon, Brother and Epson. They will not accept damaged cartridges no name refills or laser toner cartridges. Their website is at www.therecyclingfactory.com and their address for recycled cartridges is Freepost RSYA-SZBS-LRTL, The Recycling Factory, Marsh Lane, Boston, PE21 7TX. At our last meeting Bill Tilby offered to collect the cartridges together and make one posting if that helps folk.
Our Facebook Page.
Not everyone is a lover of Social Media, but just to remind people that we do have a Facebook page. It is a closed group, so one of our moderators will need to accept you into the community. It is one more way of staying in touch with like minded people and our events.
The page address is: www.facebook.com/groups/heartsandminds
